When Pigs Fly: Air Hogs Helix X4 Stunt Drone Review

Helix X4 Stunt Drone Overview

When it comes to remote-controlled quadcopters that can fly with impressive maneuverability, the Helix series from Air Hogs is always worth a mention. With the Air Hogs Helix X4 Stunt quadcopter, the company tries to soar to new heights.

Promising to offer superior flight control compared to regular RC copters, the Helix X4 looks like it could become the most popular product Spin Master has created. The craft’s advanced remote control system and sensors promise the next level of flight experience for beginner pilots.

We’re taking a closer look at this quad with our Helix X4 Stunt drone review.

Helix X4 Stunt Specifications

At first look, this quad doesn’t offer much when it comes to design and aesthetics. But after taking it out of the box and letting it take off the ground, that’s when the magic happens.

This Air Hogs helicopter makes up for the lack of beauty with a number of impressive moves and its commendable durability. It really lives up to its name of being a stunt drone, as it can handle all the action moves without a scratch.

What’s in the Box

The box comes with the drone itself, a 2.4 GHz radio remote control, and an instruction manual. Based on several Air Hogs Quadcopter review, the package’s main problem is the battery. It comes with a USB charger, which would allow battery charging through the controller. The LiPo battery for the drone is built into it, but the ones for the controller are sold separately, which is a bummer.

Battery

The Helix X4 Stunt has a non-removable, non-replaceable 3.7 V LiPo battery. The controller runs on 8 AA batteries. We like how the USB charger cable can be plugged into a laptop or PC, and can be used to power up both the controller and the drone itself.

You can charge the controller batteries and plug the Helix X4 to it and wait for it to power up. Better yet, connect the USB cable to an AC adapter for a quicker charge for the Helix X4. For the controller, it would be best to buy rechargeable batteries for a good investment in the long run.

Build

A number Helix X4 Stunt reviews agree that this unit is not really in the running for any looks contest. When compared to other Air Hogs drones, you will see that it really does belong to the Spin Master family.

At first look, you will notice that it doesn’t look like a conventional helicopter or a regular quad. It’s more of a quadricopter that resembles a hovercraft with its four port and ducted fans. This feature is both good and bad; good because it allows for great durability, and bad because it could be an eyesore for some people.

Don’t be fooled by the looks, however. The Helix X4 Stunt is impressive from a technical perspective. It has 4 ducted fans that allows for increased speed and maneuverability. Its creators claim the tech inside it is state-of-the-art and its specs are almost comparable to military-styled designs.

The quad is made of durable, crash-resistant foam that protects the rotors from impacts. The design, while could it could have been improved, does a lot in ensuring the whole unit is compact and durable. Because all the parts are somewhat close, the move can move through the air with admirable speed and agility—perfect for avoiding most obstacles.

Camera

The Air Hogs Helix X4 Stunt quadcopter is really a drone for fun—nothing else. It does not have a camera and it does not have support for one. We see this as a downside, as it would be great to capture action images or footages.

That lack of camera, however, does not diminish the quad’s features one bit. This unit is still impressive with all the stunts it can do, it’s easy to forget the fact that it can’t take photos.

Navigation

What makes the Helix X4 Stunt a joy for pilots is its aerial acrobatics. It can perform insane maneuvers worthy of its tag as a stunt drone. Backflips, barrel rolls, and 180-degree flips are all possible with just a push of a button.

It also proves to be great for pilots of all skill levels. To help beginners ease into the joy of flight, the Helix X4 Stunt comes with two control modes: novice and expert.

The Novice mode is perfect for beginners who want to start learning and experimenting with quads without a steep learning curve. The gyro stabilization does a great job in helping you control and steer the drone in whatever direction you want. It also lets it recover quick after flips and rolls.

The Expert mode, meanwhile, gives more experienced pilots the power and freedom they need to perform more complicated stunts, such as circles and figure eight flights, all while on their way to mastering the drone.

The 2.4 GHz remote control does a great job in keeping control of the unit, as well as in increasing the strength and distance of the control's signal. A few Air Hogs Helix X4 Stunt reviews, however, agree that this quad is better suited indoors, in a large room with a lot of open space and few obstacles.

The Verdict

In all, the Air Hogs Helix X4 Stunt drone provides awesome fun, but falls a little short in taking the flight experience to a new level. Yes, it flies and can perform stunts, but that’s about it. It’s a good drone, but a better toy.

With a suggested retail price of $65, however, it does make for a pretty convincing buy. Based on our Air Hogs Helix X4 Stunt drone review, this unit is a good way to get into RC-powered flight that will give you tons of fun. The price tag even buys you a decent flying time combined with an impressive flight system and control.
